Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring, publishing, and promoting content so that AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — cite and recommend a specific brand when answering a buyer's question in that brand's category.
Traditional search optimization focuses on ranking a webpage in Google's list of blue links. AEO focuses on something different: whether an AI system, when generating a direct answer to a user's question, includes and recommends your brand by name.
This distinction matters because a growing share of research and buying journeys now start — and sometimes end — inside an AI conversation, not a search results page. If an AI tool never mentions your brand while answering a relevant question, you are effectively invisible to everyone who asked that question, regardless of how well you rank on Google.
AI answer engines generate responses by drawing on a combination of training data and, increasingly, live retrieval from the web. To be cited, a brand's content needs to be:
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a webpage in search results | Get cited/recommended in an AI-generated answer |
| Primary surface | Google, Bing search results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews |
| Success metric | Keyword rankings, organic traffic | Share of Model — citation frequency across queries |
| Content format | Keyword-optimized long-form pages | Structured Q&A, clear entity definitions, schema markup |
| Authority signal | Backlinks, domain authority | Digital PR on sources AI trusts, consistent structured data |
| Relationship | Complementary — a strong SEO foundation supports AEO, and vice versa | |
| Dimension | GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) | AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Broad — optimizing for any generative AI output (summaries, chat, search) | Focused — optimizing specifically to be the cited answer to a direct question |
| Origin | Coined as the generative-AI counterpart to SEO | Often used interchangeably with GEO in practice; emphasizes the "answer" moment |
| Typical use | Used in broader industry/research discussions of AI search | Used more in applied marketing/agency contexts — the term Macaw Digital uses operationally |
| Relationship | Two names largely describing the same discipline — Macaw Digital treats them as synonyms in client work | |
| Dimension | Traditional Agency | Macaw Digital |
|---|---|---|
| What's sold | Hours of production — copy, graphics, ad variations | Strategy, orchestration, and AEO/GEO visibility outcomes |
| Use of AI | Often avoided or used quietly behind the scenes | Used openly to handle execution, freeing time for strategy |
| AEO/GEO capability | Rarely offered as a distinct service | Core service — Share of Model tracking, LLM visibility audits |
| Pricing model | Hourly or per-asset ($/blog post, $/ad) | Flat-fee and retainer packages tied to outcomes |
| Brand protection | Inconsistent editorial oversight of AI output | Dedicated Brand Guardrails & Editorial AI retainer |
